Compass Finance LLC ("Compass," "we," "us," or "our") operates the Compass personal budgeting application and the website at www.mycompass.money (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. Information We Collect

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address and authentication information needed to sign you in and secure your account.

Financial account data (via Plaid). With your permission, we connect to your bank and financial institutions through our data provider, Plaid Inc. ("Plaid"). Through Plaid, we receive information such as your account balances, account names and types, and transaction history (including transaction amounts, dates, and descriptions). We do not receive or store your online banking username or password — those are handled by Plaid, not by Compass.

Budgeting information you provide. We collect the information you enter into the Service, such as your income, bills, savings and debt-payoff goals, budget categories, and any spending you log manually.

Usage information. We collect basic technical information necessary to operate the Service, such as log data and device or browser information.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information solely to provide and improve the Service for you, including to:

  • Display your account balances and transactions;
  • Automatically categorize your transactions into spending categories;
  • Calculate your "safe to spend" amount and track your budgets and goals;
  • Help you plan how to allocate each paycheck;
  • Authenticate you and secure your account;
  • Respond to your support requests;
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the Service.

We do not sell your personal or financial information. We do not use your financial data for advertising. We do not share your data with third parties except as described in Section 3.

3. How We Share Your Information

We share your information only with the service providers necessary to operate the Service, and only for that purpose:

  • Plaid Inc. — connects your financial accounts and provides your account and transaction data to us. Your use of Plaid is also governed by Plaid's own privacy policy, available at plaid.com/legal.
  • Supabase — provides the secure database and authentication infrastructure where your data is stored.
  • Anthropic — we use Anthropic's AI service to automatically categorize your transactions. When we do this, transaction information such as the merchant name and amount may be processed by Anthropic to determine the appropriate spending category. This data is used only to categorize your transactions and is not used to train models on your personal financial data.
  • Vercel — provides hosting and delivery of the Service.
  • Email provider — we use a third-party email service to send you account-related messages such as sign-in confirmations and password resets.

We may also disclose information if required to do so by law, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to comply with a legal obligation, protect our rights or the safety of others, or investigate fraud.

If Compass is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any such change in ownership or control of your personal information.

4. How We Protect Your Information

We take the security of your financial data seriously. We use industry-standard measures to protect it, including:

  • Encryption of data in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest;
  • Database-level access controls (row-level security) that ensure each user can only access their own data;
  • Storing sensitive credentials, such as financial-institution access tokens, on our servers only — never exposed to your browser or device.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. However, we work to protect your information and to promptly address any issues that arise.

5. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal and financial information from our active systems, except where we are required to retain it to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements. When you disconnect a financial account, we instruct Plaid to remove the associated connection.

6. Your Rights and Choices

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you;
  • Correct inaccurate information;
  • Delete your account and associated data;
  • Disconnect your financial accounts at any time from within the Service.

To exercise any of these rights, use the controls within the Service or contact us at admin@mycompass.money.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under applicable privacy laws (such as the California Consumer Privacy Act). We honor these rights for all users regardless of location. We do not sell personal information, and we do not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.

7. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed to individuals under the age of 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you through the Service. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
