Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Compass personal budgeting application and the website at www.mycompass.money (collectively, the "Service"), operated by Compass Finance LLC ("Compass," "we," "us," or "our").

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Who May Use the Service

You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding contract to use the Service. By using the Service, you represent that you meet these requirements and that the information you provide is accurate and complete.

2. What the Service Does

Compass is a personal budgeting tool. It connects to your financial accounts (through our provider, Plaid) to show your balances and transactions, automatically categorize your spending, calculate what you can safely spend, and help you plan your bills, budgets, and savings or debt-payoff goals.

Compass is not a bank, financial advisor, broker, or money-transmission service. We do not hold, move, or have access to your money. The Service does not initiate payments, transfers, or transactions on your behalf. Any transfers you make between your own accounts are actions you take yourself, directly with your financial institutions.

3. Not Financial Advice

The information the Service provides — including your "safe to spend" amount, budget figures, and any suggestions — is for informational and organizational purposes only. It is not financial, investment, tax, or legal advice. You are solely responsible for your own financial decisions. We encourage you to consult a qualified professional before making significant financial decisions.

The Service relies on data provided by third parties (such as Plaid and your financial institutions), which may be delayed, incomplete, or inaccurate. Your account balances and transactions in Compass may not reflect real-time activity at your bank. You should always verify important information directly with your financial institution.

4. Your Account

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us promptly at admin@mycompass.money if you suspect unauthorized use of your account. We are not liable for any loss arising from unauthorized use of your account.

5. Connecting Financial Accounts

When you connect a financial account, you authorize us and our provider Plaid to access and retrieve information from that account on your behalf. Your use of Plaid is subject to Plaid's own end-user terms and privacy policy. You may disconnect your financial accounts at any time from within the Service.

You represent that you are authorized to provide access to any financial account you connect.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of these Terms;
  • Access or attempt to access any account or data that is not your own;
  • Interfere with, disrupt, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service or its systems;
  • Reverse engineer, copy, or resell any part of the Service except as permitted by law;
  • Use the Service to violate the rights of any third party.

We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms.

7. Intellectual Property

The Service, including its software, design, and content (excluding your own data), is owned by Compass Finance LLC and is protected by intellectual property laws. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for your personal, non-commercial use. You retain all rights to the data you provide.

8. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on third-party providers, including Plaid, Supabase, Anthropic, Vercel, and an email provider. We are not responsible for the acts, omissions, or availability of these third parties. Your use of features that depend on them may be subject to their terms.

9. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.

We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that any data displayed will be accurate or current.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Compass Finance LLC and its owners, employees, and agents will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of the Service.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid us, if any, for the Service in the twelve months before the claim, or (b) one hundred U.S. dollars ($100).

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Compass Finance LLC and its owners, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of a third party.

12. Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, if we believe you have violated these Terms or to protect the Service or other users. Upon termination, the provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive will continue to apply.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Maryland, and you consent to personal jurisdiction there.

14. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you through the Service. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
